Former United States Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs

Carl J. Artman served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affiars under President George W. Bush. His office had jurisdiction over the Office of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Indian Education from 2007 to 2008. He served as the Associate Solicitor for Indian Affairs at the Department of the Interior from 2005 to 2007. Prior to the appointments, Carl was chief legal counsel for the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin in Green Bay.
Today, Carl represents Indian tribes seeking new ways to develop their on-reservation and near-reservation economies. He serves on the faculty of Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law.
He received a bachelor of arts from Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business, a JD from Washington University in St. Louis, and an LLM from University of Denver College of Law.
