Stephen M. Ryan, Esq. is an attorney in Washington, D.C. who began his career in public service providing counsel to President Ronald Reagan's administration. As a trial lawyer, he argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit against Enron. Most recently, Steve served on the legal team for President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen during the Russian investigation.   

Steve’s public service began during the Reagan administration, serving as general counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs. He participated in all aspects of the committee’s legislative and oversight activities. In addition, he served as deputy counsel for President Reagan’s Commission on Organized Crime, directing investigations against La Cosa Nostra and other criminals. He also served as an assistant U.S. attorney in D.C., prosecuting criminal cases. Steve was recognized with a special commendation from the attorney general and other Justice Department awards for his service.

Today, Steve is an attorney with McDermott Will & Emery, a firm that counsels clients in more than 100 countries across six continents, including 81 percent of the Fortune 100. He provides lobbying, litigation and counseling services for the high-technology community and companies in highly regulated industries and serves as head of the firm’s government strategies practice.

As part of his deep commitment to pro bono activity, Steve has represented Operation HOPE, a financial literacy group, for the last decade. He was previously an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and is a co-author of a book on procurement ethics.
